Salt air eats equipment out here
A pool a mile inland and a pool on Normandy Isle get the same chemistry and completely different equipment lifespans. Salt in the air works on every metal fastener, every motor housing, every heater cabinet and every screen enclosure fastener on the island. Pump motors that run eight to ten years in Kendall often go at five or six here.
So on Beach routes we look at hardware, not just water. Corrosion at the motor end bell, rust bleeding from a heater panel, chalky white on the union nuts, screws in the cage base plate going soft. We put it on the door tag when we see it starting, because a $40 stainless screw pack now beats a cage panel repair later.
One thing that helps and costs nothing: rinse the equipment pad with fresh water every few weeks if you have a hose out there. Salt that gets rinsed off does not sit and work on the metal. Owners who do that get noticeably more life out of a heater.
Sand, wind and small pools
Beach pools are usually smaller than mainland pools and they get more people in them. A courtyard pool behind a house south of Fifth might be 8,000 gallons with six people in it on a Saturday. That is a heavy bather load for the volume, and it burns chlorine fast.
Sand is the other constant. It blows in, it settles in the deep end, and it will not come out with a net. It has to be vacuumed, and on windy weeks it needs vacuuming more than once. We would rather vacuum than let it sit, because sand under a robot wheel scours plaster.
Small volume also means chemistry moves fast. A dose that would barely register in a 20,000 gallon Pinecrest pool can overshoot pH in an 8,000 gallon courtyard pool. We dose smaller and test more here, which is the whole reason we test on site instead of working off last week.
Access and parking, said plainly
Tight streets, permit parking, service elevators, and gates that need a code or a call up. None of that stops us, we just need it sorted before the first visit rather than while the truck is double parked.
